Why Engage a Professional Resume Writer? What Are You Paying For?
It seems that this question is one which, as in most fields, is clouded by issues such as the client’s proposed budget, how much they perceive the product or service is worth, and how much value they place on this.
Professional CV or Resume writing is no exception.
Several clients will make statements such as “Oh, but X company quoted me half your price” without really understanding what they are paying for. This field, like many others, appears to be one in which consumers need education in regards to the industry and its regulation.
Most clients do not realize that resume and CV writing is regulated. That is, membership to professional organizations such as Career Directors International and the Professional Association of Resume Writers, offers not only a code of practice, but ongoing professional development, and certification and education programs to writers.
In essence, any secretary or administrative professional can one fine sunny morning decide to put up their shingle and launch their resume writing business. But it isn’t quite that simple. There are several factors that go into writing a resume, along with associated questions that a client should really be asking. These will ultimately affect not only price, but the quality of the documentation; How long has the resume writer been in business? Can you see samples of their work? Are they a published author? What professional memberships and accreditations do they hold? Are they active within the community, do they delivery any industry workshops or similar?I am pleased to report that I can answer yes to these questions, but in all honesty, you should use these questions to assist you in deciding which service can best meet your needs. As a guide, around $200 to $400+ is a reasonable price to pay for a specialist resume writer that will produce an effective document, resulting in increased job interviews.
Anything less than that and you may be employing a secretary to “type” your CV, definitely NOT what all resume writers do. In educating consumers, hopefully we can help to improve the industry, and educate clients on what they can expect from such a service.
